Motourama Part 10: First Night Camping

Hello family, friends and followers! Today’s Travel Story of our motorcycle adventure has us sleeping in the tent for the first time.

In Bork Havn, where we left off in the last Travel Story, we had found a nice camping ground with very fair prices. This was to be where the so called “virgin voyage” of our tent would take place. The weather was perfect; beautiful sunshine with a crisp, light wind from southwest and a very agreeable temperature of 16 °C. The tent was up in only 10 minutes and we didn’t even have a fight about which poles went where. Great success!

Pegging down the tent – our home for the next long while.

Entirely pleased with ourselves and our effort, we decided, after a bit of “home decoration” (basically throwing all our stuff in the tent in a firm, but loving manner), to celebrate with a walk along the harbour and a search for something to please our appetite. Lo and behold, we found nothing fancy, as it was still the off-season. Only a grill bar was open, but they did have a mean chicken bacon sandwich with curry dressing on the menu. One serving was enough to fill both of us up. “Not fancy” did not equal not good. We were also gifted with a nice view of the harbour from our table, where the local, small fishing vessels where moored, waving lazily. Not a bad view, not bad at all. On the other side of the harbour, there was a row of house boats, neatly placed side by side. Perhaps distant cousins of the ones in Germany? You be the judge:

As the evening was very pleasant, we made our way out on the beach after our dinner, to see the sunset. As sunsets go, this one was nothing spectacular as such, but still heartwarming for Esben, as it was the first of the year he got to see in Denmark. Esben is quite fond of his little home country with its lulling, hilly landscape, broad sea shores with dunes stretching far into the landscape, and cosy, friendly people, living in their cosy, friendly homes in the cosy, friendly towns and cities. There is nothing rough or tough, really, about the landscape, but it has a beauty of its own. And when the wind picks up and the weather really gets going, which is not a seldom occasion, the landscape can transform into a ruggedly, handsome version of itself. Yes, Esben is quite fond of his little home country, indeed.

With that out of the way, let’s continue the Travel Story. The sunset was nice, the beach sandy, and the water wet. We strolled a bit along the beach before returning back to our tent which, surprisingly enough, was still standing! Not that we had expected it not to, but you can never be too certain about such things. To be fair to the tent, it does give a very good impression of sturdiness. With peace of mind about the structural integrity of our tent, we made our beds, plugged in our plethora of gizmos and gadgets to the power, organised the footage of the day, and then settled in for the night. A night of warm bliss in the comforts of our, now quite beloved, sleeping bags.

Plugged in and ready. The transfer can commence!

After a successful first night in the tent, with as much sleep as you can hope for in new surroundings, we awoke to a windy but sunny day. Denmark was showing herself from her nice side. We got the tent down in a jiffy – much faster than setting it up, we might just add – and while the combination of wind and sunshine helped dry the morning dew off it, we enjoyed some smoked cream cheese on crackers for breakfast.

Reinvigorated from both the night and the breakfast, we packed the bikes, and set off towards Sæby – Esben’s home town – in the north of Denmark.

Until next time, stay beautiful!
