Motourama Part 6: Four Hours of Snow – in the End of April!

Hello family, friends and followers! In this instalment of our Travel Stories, it gets cold.

Starting off from Nürnberg in the early morning hours, we soon hit the first signs of what was going to be a four hour stretch of snow and snow mixed with rain.

What is this? Snow and a Christmas tree? In the end of April?! What a day.

At first we found it novel and a fun to ride through the snow, but Esben’s gloves and boots were soon soaked through, even though they had waterproof membranes, which made the experience a lot less fun for him. Our nice down jackets, which kept us warm through the first stretch of snow a few days earlier, has the neat party trick of being heated as well. All we had to do now was to connect them with power (either from a battery or directly to the bike with a 12V plug) for an extra boost in heat. The jackets had done their job and kept Denise from freezing much and Esben from getting a serious cold.

Having held out for a good three hours, we found a nice road side Gasthaus (inn) where we could warm us on soups and hot beverages. Esben’s fingers were as shrivelled as after a long trip to the swimming pool and small puddles had formed in his boots. Luckily there was a nice and hot heater next to the table, and all our wet layers of clothes got to dry up (more or less) in the time it got for us to warm up again. The heated grips did a heck of a job as well, and helped dry out the last of the water in the gloves during the remaining 8 hours of the trip.

When we finally arrived in Brandenburg, we received a warm welcome with a grilled feast to help banish the last of the coldness in our bones. We also experienced a birth of sorts. More on that in the next update.

Until then, keep cool and stay frosty.
